Arizona Legislative Alert – 4/4/21

Over 300 bills have been introduced by Republican Legislatures across the country to suppress the vote.  Arizona is doing its share – at least 25 bills to suppress the vote in Arizona are being considered.

Our efforts to let the legislators know how we feel about these terrible bills seems to be having some affect.  So – KEEP IT UP!!  Contact our legislators via phone or e-mail.  It might be best to focus on the Senate and House leadership since they have the ultimate power to make or break these bills.

Here is the contact information for our Legislators:

WOMEN’S RIGHTS (Going to Senate Floor Vote)

SB1457 – OPPOSE – Makes it a crime to terminate a pregnancy of a fetus with a genetic abnormality by declaring that it has the same legal rights as anyone else.  Doctors who perform the procedure could be charged with class 3 felony which carries a term of 3 ½ years in prison.  Scheduled for a SENATE floor vote and if it passes (which it is likely to) it goes to the Governor.

VOTING RIGHTS (Going to House Floor Vote)

SB1485 – OPPOSE – Would strip voters from the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) if they fail to use their early ballots in two back-to-back elections and strikes the word “permanent” from statute.  This could purge over 225,000 voters from the list.

SB1713- OPPOSE – Requires voters to send their early ballots back with proof of their eligibility to vote: an early ballot affidavit with their date of birth and a copy of their ID!!

SB1106 – OPPOSE – Would make it a class 5 felony to help someone vote in Arizona if they reside in another state, including forwarding them their early ballot.  This discourages college students and winter visitors from registering and voting in Arizona.

GOVERNANCE (Going to Senate Floor Vote)

HB2569 – OPPOSE – Would bar election officials from receiving private or public funds to run an election, register voters, or combat election disinformation! Private funding is NECESSARY if the government isn’t going to commit to sustainable long-term funding!

ENVIRONMENT (Going to Senate Floor Vote)

HB2248 – OPPOSE – Infringes on the powers of the Arizona Corporation Commission and seeks to derail clean energy rules, policies and other important actions by the ACC.

SB1448 – OPPOSE – It increases the burden of those who would bring a nuisance action against an agricultural operation such as large concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO’s)

HB2691 – OPPOSE – It prohibits protecting most of our state’s waters – more than 90% of our waters are ephemeral or intermittent.  It also fails to recognize the cultural significance of waters for Tribal Nations.

THE NEXT TWO BILLS ARE GOING TO THE GOVERNOR TO SIGN. IT IS BEST TO CALL HIS OFFICE TO VOICE YOUR OPPOSITION – 602-542-4331.  IF YOU TWEET – SEND YOUR OPPOSITION VIA TWITTER – @DOUGDUCEY (He hates to get Tweets it seems!!)

RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP

HB 2111 – OPPOSE – Declares any law that “violates the 2nd amendment” to be void in Arizona.  It does not specify what such laws might be hence guaranteeing a lot of court challenges at tax payer expense.

PUBLIC SAFETYHB 2770 – OPPOSE – Exempts businesses from enforcing mask mandates.  Over 130 Arizona physicians have signed a letter urging lawmakers not to pass the bill.
