COCONINO COUNTY DEMOCRATS ARIZONA LEGISLATIVE ALERT

April 30, 2023

STATUS

STATUS

The State Legislature reconvened on April 25 for a few hours and did nothing. They have recessed again until May 3. The County Commissioners in Maricopa County (Republicans) are in no hurry to name a replacement for Liz Harris who was expelled from the AZ Senate for not being a “team player”. Maricopa isn’t even interviewing potential replacements for Ms. Harris until May 3 so expect another recess. Without their 1 seat majority, Senate Republicans are unwilling to even consider working with Democrats to get urgently needed legislation done.
The AZ House passed, unanimously, a bill (HB 2456) to extend funding for the Arizona School for the Deaf and the Blind for 8 more years. The AZ Senate forced a compromise to significantly cut that funding for this school which has been active 1912!! This is a blatant attack on vulnerable communities in our state and should not be allowed to go unchallenged!! Let our State Senators know how you feel!!
You may have heard that Representative Stahl-Hamilton was caught on tape hiding bibles in the House members’ lounge. Ms. Stahl-Hamilton is a pastor and a strong supporter of the separation of church and state. You may wonder why there are bibles in the members’ lounge AND why they have hidden cameras filming people. Good questions!! Ms. Stahl-Hamilton has apologized for her method of demonstrating the need for a separation of church and state but has NOT apologized for the need to make that statement. Send her some supporting comments at .

Send a note to our state Representatives as well on a number of still active and potentially approved bills:
OPPOSE SB 1278 – a bill to limit cities’ and towns’ ability to protect their residents via local building codes provisions related to affordability, energy and public health.
OPPOSE SB 1312, SB 1313, SB 1314 – bills that would hinder efforts by local governments and the state to reduce traffic and promote public transit and biking.
OPPOSE SB 1139, SB 1500 – bills to prohibit consideration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors when deciding on state investments!
OPPOSE SB 1141 – a bill that requires additional voter ID to drop off an early ballot – would further make voting more difficult!
