The Coconino County Democratic Party supports impeachment proceedings against President Donald J. Trump. The Constitution of the United States of America gives the House of Representatives the sole power to impeach. (Article I, Section 2, Clause 5.) Yesterday, the Speaker of the House announced the initiation of impeachment proceedings. We support that action and call on our Elected Officials, regardless of Party to do so as well.
There can be no doubt that what we already know about President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine constitute an abuse of power. What we see in the Memorandum of his call with the Ukrainian President released by the White House this morning is a “high crime and misdemeanor” if anything is. The President solicited the help of a foreign power to manufacture dirt on his political opponents (reference to “CrowdStrike” means the Democratic National Committee and reference to Biden). Furthermore, he told the President of Ukraine that he needed this “favor” in connection with releasing military aid that had been authorized by Congress and signed into law by Trump himself. Also, he promised the Ukrainian president that a career diplomat, Marie Yovanovitch (misspelled in the Memorandum), who has been the subject of radical, right-wing conspiracy theories “would be “going through some things” — a clear threat against a State Department employee and former Ambassador of the United States. Finally, the Memorandum documents that Trump enlisted the help not only of his private attorney, Mr. Giuiliani, but also of U.S. Attorney General Barr to investigate one of his political opponents and to seek the help of a foreign government in doing so.
As Speaker Pelosi said this morning, “The President of the U.S., in breach of his constitutional responsibilities, has asked a foreign government to help him in his political campaign at the expense of our national security as well as undermining the integrity of our elections. That cannot stand.”
The impeachment proceedings should not only address this new alarming development about our relations with Ukraine but other matters that have been under investigation by Congressional Committees. The American people deserve to know as much of the story as can promptly be discerned so that they can make their own judgments about the President
We, the Coconino County Democratic Party, call on all of our Elected Officials to support the on-going impeachment proceedings and, when the time comes, to vote for impeachment of Donald J. Trump. As Arizona Democratic House Leader Charlene Fernandez said this morning, in reference to the President, “We need leaders that have the judgment and humility to know right from wrong and have the desire to do right.” Different political jurisdictions may be “Red” or “Blue” or “Purple,” but the Constitution is the same everywhere in the United States as is the Oath of Office our leaders take to protect and defend it.
