‘Dems Deliver’ with neighborly food initiative

As the 2018 Election Cycle gets under way, we must take time to recognize and support those most in need, who can’t wait for another election. 30% of our own community (22,000 people) live at or below the poverty line. Congressional cuts to SNAP and other food assistance programs have dramatically limited access, putting more people at greater risk.

Community efforts have been launched across the nation to help support larger food distribution centers as their operations face budget cuts and overwhelming need. These “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” programs have supported thousands of starving families through millions of pounds of food donations to local food centers annually. Through community and neighborhood organizing, people have effectively supporter larger distribution centers with ongoing and sustainable support.

In order to “Double Down” on our own efforts, Coconino County Democratic Party is working to incorporate a similar model into our own community. By following an ongoing food drive model and supporting the very successful neighborhood food center, Flagstaff Family Food Bank and Kitchen, we know we can make a real difference in the fight to end hunger.

We have ordered blue, reusable tote bags that we will distribute among applicants to support collection efforts. On your regular grocery trip, fill the tote with nutritious, non-perishable food donations and we will come to pick it up from you on our regularly scheduled, bi-monthly pick ups. We will mass deliver these donations to the food center, and repeat the process! It’s that easy, but only if we have the support! Let’s practice what we preach as Democrats and take on hunger in Flagstaff.
