Masha Gessen: The Future is History
January 27 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
This lecture will draw on three of Gessen’s books – The Future Is History, Never Remember, and Ester and Ruzya – to explore some issues of political choice. Individuals and, indeed, entire societies make decisions based on what they can imagine. The imagination is, in turn, shaped by what we remember, or the stories we can tell about what we remember.
Having lived as a journalist in Moscow, with family ties to Polish and Russian Jewry during the Holocaust and Stalin’s reign, Masha Gessen explores issues of political choice. Gessen is a journalist and the author of The Future is History, winner of the 2017 National Book Award for nonfiction. A regular contributor to major publications, such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, and Slate, Gessen has appeared on Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.
