THIS WEEK’S ALERTS: Demand that the Senate PASS the Respect for Marriage
Act!!; Insist that our Representatives demand a full implementation of President
Biden’s Justice40 Initiative in the wake of passing the Inflation Reduction Act!!!
A. Pass the Respect for Marriage Act in the Senate! The House has passed
the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would enshrine into federal law the
right to same-sex and interracial marriage, as well as repeal the Defense of
Marriage Act, a law allowing states to refuse to recognize same-sex
marriages. This law would protect the right to marry whomever you want from
any future adverse Supreme Court decision. This is a particular fear in view
of Clarence Thomas’ view that other privacy rights (like marriage) may be
reviewed now that they have overturned Roe v. Wade. More than 70% of
American’s support this effort so it’s both popular and the right thing to do!
Get our Senators on board with demanding that the Respect for
Marriage Act be brought to a full Senate vote ASAP and that they
support its passage.
B. Demand that all our Representatives insist the White House strengthen the
Justice40 initiative on climate spending. President Biden announced his Justice40
Initiative in 2021 which states that the government will send 40% of federal
investment benefits to frontline communities. With the passage of the Inflation
Reduction Act we need to make sure the Justice40 Initiative is fully and robustly
implemented. Specifically, we want funding directed to communities that are most
vulnerable to historic discrimination, pollution, and climate change; ensure that
Justice40 creates good paying jobs in frontline communities; ensure that all federal
investments “do no harm” to disadvantaged communities and require agencies to
publicly report impact assessments; and require all agencies to implement Justice40
initiatives quickly and comprehensively. Call our Representatives and insist that
they sign on to the letter to the White House drafted by US Reps Maloney,
Khanna, Bush, and Tlaib and Senator Markey.
