John McCain deserves high praise for his principled call to start an independent Congressional investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, including Russia’s possible collusion with members of the Trump campaign team.
Arizona’s other U.S. senator, Jeff Flake, should buck the Republican establishment and add his voice to McCain’s.
It’s been obvious since November that neither the Republican-controlled House nor the Senate can adequately conduct such an inquiry. Trump’s firing on Tuesday of FBI Director James Comey — in the middle of that agency’s investigation — only underscores this fact.
By playing along with his party’s cynical attempts to do damage control for the White House, rather than seriously address a national crisis, Flake fails the American people. Voters will remember.
