Seventy-one enthusiastic Dems attended our monthly Democratic Action and Quarterly Business Meeting on Saturday, August 8, determined as ever to ensure the election in November of all of our outstanding Democratic candidates.
Special thanks to Flagstaff mayoral candidate Paul Deasy and council candidates Anthony Garcia, Jim McCarthy, and Eric Senseman for participating, along with Coconino County Board Supervisor candidates Patrice Horstman (District 1) and Judy Begay (District 4).
Our candidate introduction series continued with Eric Senseman, who outlined his campaign and vision for affordable housing, sustainable development, and preserving open space. Read more details here.

Filling vacancies recently created when our former CC Dems Chair Shannah Redmon and Treasurer Phil Dudas stepped down to devote their attention to family medical concerns, our PCs elected Marie Sansone Second Vice Chair and Bill Wade Treasurer.
After breakout room discussions to discuss what we as individuals will be doing to support our candidates (as much as we possibly can!), we moved onto the business portion of the meeting.
While all four statewide initiatives remain tied up in court, if they are cleared to appear on the ballot, CC Dems agreed to recommend a “yes” vote on the Stop Surprise Medical Billing, Second Chances and Rehabilitation, and Invest in Ed propositions. There was also some strongly voiced support of the Arizona Marijuana Legalization Initiative among the PCs present. Anyone wanting to help support the appeal of the superior court decision throwing the Invest in Ed initiative off the ballot should visit the website, investined.com. From the Treasurer’s report, we learned that we have ample funds to support our campaigns and activities through the election, leaving an adequate reserve to begin the new year. New efforts are underway to bolster our campaign and outreach efforts, including door hangers and sample ballots, and also to provide administrative support relief to our hardworking office manager.
Mission for Arizona reported that its phone-banking efforts to elect Mark Kelly US Senator have exceeded expectations. In LD 6, now that state Rep. Sylvia Allen went down to defeat in the LD6 Republican primary, we are well-positioned to focus on electing Felicia French as our new state senator. Dennis Chavez reported on Latinx Committee efforts to increase outreach in the Flagstaff area, and also to Latinx groups on the reservations. The Latinx Committee has produced four engaging podcasts that have already garnered over 2,000 hits. Take a listen on Facebook at @LatinxCoconinoDems.
We heard a brilliant presentation on social media campaigns from Jaynie Parrish, director of Northeast Arizona Native Democrats, a coalition of Native American Democrats in Coconino, Navajo, Apache, and Gila Counties. Northeast Arizona Native Democrats currently has 14 paid organizers on the ground, working with the Navajo, Hopi, White Mountain Apache, and San Carlos Apache people.
