Last week Senate Minority Leader McConnell claimed the only reason 7 in 10 Americans supported the American Rescue Plan was because they didn’t know what was in it. New polling shows that as Americans have learned more about the bill, their support for it holds.
71 percent of Americans support Biden’s rescue package, including two in three Independents (67 percent) and nearly half of Republicans (48 percent). This comes as more are hearing “a lot” or “some” about the proposal by a double digit margin compared to just two weeks ago (from 37 percent to 48 percent).
- Support for relief comes at a time when ratings of the state of the economy are at their lowest in a year. Only 19% positively rate the state of the economy, and more than half of Americans are uneasy about their personal financial situation (55 percent).
- Americans continue to prefer the government do more rather than less financially. More than three in five Americans continue to be more concerned that the federal government is doing too little to help in this moment of economic crisis (62 percent) rather than spend too much and put the country further into debt (38 percent).
- A majority of Americans believe Republicans are trying to block what President Biden is doing to try to improve the economy. By a 32-point margin, more Americans agree that Republicans in Congress are trying to block what Biden is trying to do to improve the economy (52 percent) versus just 20 percent who say they are working with him.
