Today, President Biden and Attorney General Garland announced the following six initial actions to reduce the epidemic of gun violence that our nation labors under:
- The Justice Department, within 30 days, will issue a proposed rule to help stop the proliferation of “ghost guns.”
- The Justice Department, within 60 days, will issue a proposed rule to make clear that devices marketed as stabilizing braces are subject to the National Firearms Act.
- The Justice Department, within 60 days, will publish model “red flag” legislation for states.
- The Justice Department will issue an annual report on firearms trafficking.
- The administration is investing in substantive evidence-based community violence interventions – proven strategies for reducing gun violence in urban communities.
- President Biden will nominate David Chipman to serve as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). David Chipman is a gun owner, decorated law enforcement official, and former special agent. He’ll help enforce laws that protect communities from violence, criminal activities, acts of terrorism, and illegal trafficking.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said this: “I would say that people like Fred_Guttenberg and Shannon Watts and Gabby Giffords, I mean, these are people who are absolute heroes on getting gun-safety measures in place.” Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, said “These and other executive actions we expect the Biden Administration to roll out on Thursday are a huge step for gun safety that will save lives, and –– according to the administration –– they are just the beginning of President Biden’s plan to address gun violence in America.”
This is the beginning. Congress and legislatures must enact reasonable gun safety laws.
