PUBLIC SAFETY

SB 1650 – Michelle Ugenti-Rita (R-23) – OPPOSE – Would make it very easy to justify shooting someone if a property owner felt the person was damaging their property.  It would be ok to shoot someone for tagging a building with graffiti.  (Not eligible for RTS e-mail or phone reps directly)

HB 2498 – Jake Hoffman (R-12) – OPPOSE – Would ban state and local governments from requiring anyone to be vaccinated for COVID.

HB 2507 – Ben Toma (R-22) – OPPOSE – Would ban governments from restricting religious organizations from meeting in-person – even during periods of emergency like COVID.

SB 1494 – JD Mesnard (R-17) – OPPOSE – Would ban the state from with holding unemployment insurance from someone who was fired because they refused to get vaccinated against COVID.

HB 2319 – John Kavanaugh (R-23) – OPPOSE – Makes it unlawful to film police from up to 15 feet away while officers are doing their thing.

SB 1273 – Tyler Pace (R-25) – OPPOSE – Would allow motorcycles to ride between stopped vehicles on city streets.

GOVERNANCE

HB 2471 – Frank Carroll (R-22) – OPPOSE – Would further reduce the Governor’s ability to deal with an emergency situation.

SB 1255 – JD Mesnard (R-17) – OPPOSE – Would establish a Lieutenant Governor position.  Also OPPOSE SCR 1024 which would put the Lt Governor position question on the November ballot.

SB 1009 – Michelle Ugenti-Rita (R-23) – OPPOSE  – Would limit the Governor’s ability to declare a state of emergency to 120 days.  After that both chambers of the legislature would need to reauthorize it.  Clearly aimed at preventing appropriate responses to key emergencies, such as COVID.

EDUCATION

HB 2616 – Joseph Chaplik (R-23) – OPPOSE – Would require a specific “opt in” consent for each student to require a mask usage at public and charter schools.

HB 2161 – Steve Kaiser (R-15) – OPPOSE – Would require publicly funded schools to give parents access to all their records, including shot records and psychological files.  Schools would be banned from withholding information from parents about students’ emotional health or gender identity, or helping the student withhold such information.  This bill makes no allowance for restraining orders or legal lack of custody.

HB 2495 – Jake Hoffman (R-12) – OPPOSE – USE RTS  – Would ban public schools from referring to or using any sexually explicit text, audio or video.  Schools would be unable to teach everything from Shakespeare and John Steinbeck to the Tudor monarch and 1960’s history!!

RESTRICTIONS ON FREEDOM TO ORGANIZE

SB 1166 – Vince Leach (R-11) – OPPOSE  – Would ban spending any state dollars on “union activities,” defined to include candidate work or lobbying for bills or ballot measures.  Seems to have been written by the dark-money libertarian Goldwater Institute.

IMMIGRATION

HB 2317 – John Kavanagh (R-23) – OPPOSE – Would use state funds to build a physical wall as a barrier to immigration.

HEALTHCARE

SB 1272 – Tyler Pace (R-25) – SUPPORT – Would use federal matching funds to extend for one year postpartum care to low-income women.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

HB 2592 – Neal Carter (R-8) – SUPPORT – Would increase Superior Court Jurors pay from $40 to #$300 a day.

LGBTQ RIGHTS

SB 1138 – Warren Petersen (R-12) – OPPOSE – Would ban medical personnel from helping anyone under the age of 18 with their gender transition.

SB 1165 – Nancy Barto (R-15) – OPPOSE – USE RTS – A reprise of the 2020 and 2021 bills to bar transgender girls from women’s sports at public and private schools, community colleges and state universities.  Discriminatory bills like this are not just morally wrong they are bad for business – a ban would stop Arizona from hosting NCAA events!!

WOMEN’S RIGHTS

SB 1164 – Nancy Barto (R-15) – OPPOSE – Would ban abortions after 15 weeks!!

TAXATION AND THE GENERAL FUND

SB 1372 – Tyler Pace (R-25) – OPPOSE – Would allow anyone who lives outside of Arizona to buy a vehicle in Arizona free of state and city sales taxes!  Huge benefit to the wealthy who can afford to fly into Arizona, buy a car and drive it home.

VOTING RIGHTS

HB 2237 – Jake Hoffman (R-12) – OPPOSE – USE RTS – Would outlaw same-day voter registration!!!  This is the OPPOSITE of what Arizona should be doing!!

HB 2243 – Jake Hoffman (R-12) – OPPOSE – Would require voter registration forms to include the statement that if someone permanently moves out of state they will be removed from the voting register.  The bill says nothing on what “permanent” means nor how county recorders are to determine that a “permanent” move has occurred.

HB 2492 – Jake Hoffman (R-12) – OPPOSE – Would require proof of residency to register to vote at least for the federal only ballot – a clear violation of federal law.  IF passed, ALL voters who registered before 2004 would have to re-register!! Huge barrier for Native Americans and the poor.HB 2236 – Jake Hoffman (R-12) – OPPOSE – Ban’s Arizona’s government or employees from registering anyone to vote unless they expressly ask to be registered.
