THIS WEEK’S ALERTS: The Senate must immediately pass the Respect for Marriage Act; Demand that the Senate PASS the Reproductive Freedom for All Act!!; Insist that our Senators resist the sneaky Mitt Romney attempt to destroy Social Security via the “Trust Act”.
- Pass the Respect for Marriage Act in the Senate! The House has passed the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would enshrine into federal law the right to same-sex and interracial marriage, as well as repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, a law allowing states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages. This law would protect the right to marry whomever you want from any future adverse Supreme Court decision. This is a particular fear in view of Clarence Thomas’ view that other privacy rights (like marriage) may be reviewed now that they have overturned Roe v. Wade. More than 70% of American’s support this effort so it’s both popular and the right thing to do! Get our Senators on board with demanding that the Respect for Marriage Act be brought to a full Senate vote ASAP and that they support its passage.
- Get our Senators to support the Reproductive Freedom for All Act! The Reproductive Freedom for All Act would codify the core protections of Roe into federal law. It would also guarantee access to contraceptives and enshrine elements of other Supreme Court decisions involving reproductive rights.
According to the text of the bill, the court has long held that the provisions of equal protection and due process under the law contained in the 14th Amendment guarantee the right to make certain reproductive decisions without government interference.
Republican senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Maine’s Susan Collins along with Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine, and Kristin Sinema are co-sponsors.
Supporters say the bill is crucial in order to protect people’s ability to make their own healthcare decisions regardless of where they live.
- Call to ask our Senators to OPPOSE Mitt Romney’s Trust Act. The TRUST Act creates a fast-tracked, back-room process to push through cuts to Social Security and Medicare that politicians wouldn’t dare consider in the light of day, in view of voters. It is a way to dismantle our earned benefits without taking responsibility for the consequences. Supporters of Romney’s bill―including Senator Kyrsten Sinema―absurdly claim that it reduces the deficit. That’s blatantly untrue: Social Security doesn’t contribute a single penny to the deficit―it’s independently funded by contributions that working Americans make with every paycheck.
