These topics emphasize that the business of politics is governing and serve as a reminder that whatever slogans you hear in the last days of this campaign, Democrats are better at actually governing. While our focus needs to continue on GOTV, here are a couple of quick actions that you can take to help ensure that Congress prioritizes unfinished business before it adjourns.
- Pass the Respect for Marriage Act in the Senate! The House has passed the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would enshrine into federal law the right to same-sex and interracial marriage, as well as repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, a law allowing states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages. This law would protect the right to marry whomever you want from any future adverse Supreme Court decision. This is a particular fear in view of Clarence Thomas’ view that other privacy rights (like marriage) may be reviewed now that they have overturned Roe v. Wade. More than 70% of Americans support this effort so it’s both popular and the right thing to do! Get our Senators on board with demanding that the Respect for Marriage Act be brought to a full Senate vote ASAP and that they support its passage.
- Reauthorize the Global Food Security Act! We are living through a growing hunger catastrophe of unprecedented proportions. Every night, 828 million people go to bed hungry worldwide, including 50 million people in 45 countries who are on the brink of starvation. We need to ask Congress to meet the moment and sufficiently fund investment in the Global Food Security Act (GFSA) so more countries can benefit. Rather than reacting to food crises, we need to take strong action to prevent them. The Global Food Security Act, a bill with bipartisan support, was designed to develop stronger food systems and prevent hunger crises like the one unfolding now in East Africa. Now it’s up for re-authorization. Demand our representatives reauthorize this act ASAP and certainly before they recess.
