COCONINO COUNTY DEMOCRATS ARIZONA LEGISLATIVE ALERT

April 24, 2023

STATUS

Both the Arizona House and Senate have recessed until April 25. They have done this since the House expelled Liz Harris (R-13). The expulsion was done because Ms. Harris wasn’t acting like a “team player”. Her wild accusations accused Republicans and Democrats of being bribed by Mexican Cartels. Ms. Harris will be replaced by the County Commissioners of Maricopa County soon.
Budget talks continue in secret so who knows what will happen there. It’s said that if you don’t have a seat at the table you’re probably on the menu. Reach out to our representatives to insist that they behave responsibly and create a fair and sustainable budget.
Senator Wendy Rogers convinced a judge to issue a restraining order against a reporter in Flagstaff who had the temerity to simply ring Roger’s doorbell. This is a clear offense against the first Amendment and an outrageous violation of press freedoms. The reporter was working on a story about whether Rogers is violating the Arizona Constitution which specifies that lawmakers must live in the county they represent. Rogers owns three homes, one just barely in LD7 and two in Maricopa County. Recently she signed a property deed that said she was “currently residing” in Tempe.
This past week Governor Hobbs bill veto total reached 63, a record! She has actually signed some 29 bills so government is still functioning. Of all the bills seen by Governor Hobbs only some 2% were sponsored by Democrats. So, the Republicans are in control of the legislative process still.
Arizona has received $6.1 Million through President Biden’s Bipartisan Safe Communities Act to specifically create and implement red-flag laws relative to gun violence. The funding comes with requirements that states implement a Crisis Intervention Advisory Board that would assist in the implementation of efforts to prevent gun violence. There is a lot that could be done, even in Arizona to reduce gun violence. The state has the money – it just needs the will!!
