FEDERAL ACTION ALERT –July 27, 2023
A. Insist our House Representative oppose any effort to eliminate federal funding for the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB)! Urge our Representative to oppose the Fiscal Year 2024 House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill and its proposals that would end public media. Multiple studies have shown that eliminating CPB funding would devastate public media service, forcing stations to cut valued programs and services or go off the air completely. Public media is the only communications service that reaches virtually every American household – including communities that are undeserved by other media sources. Rural, remote and tribal communities are more dependent on this federal support and would be the hardest hit by these proposals. For about $1.40 per American annually, federal funding for public media is a worthy investment that provides all Americans with access to programming and services that inform and enrich their daily lives. Tell our Representative to preserve local public media stations and vote against the House bill!!
B. Demand Senator Tommy Tuberville stop his tantrum over DOD (Department of Defense) policy covering travel expenses for service members seeking abortions! Senator Tuberville, Alabama, has blocked over 270 military promotions so far. The Marine Corps, for example, is without a Senate confirmed leader for the first time in 150 years. Our military will continue to operate but this single Senator’s tantrum is costing service members and their families. People are taking on work they are not compensated for, it will impact their retirement benefits, and its created financial and logistical burdens for troops’ families. Senator Tuberville has stalled all high-level military promotions since February to protest the Pentagon’s new reproductive health policies. Five members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are required by law to leave their posts over the next three months. Tuberville is playing games with our national security and the well-being of our troops. He’s threatening national security! Tell him to knock it off!!!!
C. Tell Representative Eli Crane that his “Energy Opportunities for All” Act is a blatant gift to big oil and mining and NOT some promotion of citizen rights!! Representative Crane’s act would allow unrestrained drilling and mining on Native American lands. These lands have been protected by President Biden. Specifically, Representative Crane wants to allow unrestricted mining and drilling around the Chaco Canyon National Monument and he’s trying to “sell” it by exposing Native American “rights”. This is just a gift to big oil and big mining at the expense of Native Americans – just remember the Uranium mining impacts of 50 years ago – impacts that remain to this day. Tell Representative Crane that we know what he’s up to!!!
