CONTACT GOVERNOR HOBBS TO ASK HER TO RESCIND PERMITS FOR THE PINYON PLAIN URANIUM MINE

More than 80 conservation groups, businesses, scientists and activists signed a letter this week opposing ongoing uranium mining near the Grand Canyon and asking Governor Hobbs to rescind permits allowing the mine to operate.  The mine is located just south of the Grand Canyon, near Red Butte, a place of deep cultural significance to the Havasupai Tribe.  It also sits within what is now the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.  Among the groups that signed the letter were the Center for Biological Diversity, Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter, Haul No!, The Arizona Faith Network, the Arizona Youth Climate Coalition and Wild Arizona.  The Pinyon Plain Mine sit atop the Redwall-Muav aquifer, which is the sole source of drinking water for the Havasupai, in addition to feeding many springs within the Grand Canyon.  According to Kelly Burke, Executive Director of Wil Arizona: “Gov. Hobbs has the purpose and the authority to act now before extraction of ore unleashes a forever environmental, economic and health disaster for the people, wildlife and waters of the Grand Canyon.”  Call Governor Hobbs and her staff to ask that she rescind the permits for the Pinyon Plain Mine.

BALLOT REFERRALS

Ballot Referrals go directly to the voters and Governor Hobbs can not veto them!!  It is critical that we do all we can to stop these bills from getting to our November ballot.  Not only are they awful changes to our constitution or general legislation that we must oppose.  If they get approved to go on the ballot then all of us will be consumed by the huge communications campaigns to educate voters on how bad they are and to vote them down.  We have enough to do for this critical election already – we don’t need any more:

SCR1011 – Rogers – OPPOSE – bans ranked choice voting or top-two voting from being instituted

SCR 1013 – Kavanagh – OPPPSE – would ask voters to ban trans kids from using school bathrooms, changing facilities or “sleeping quarters” that align with their gender identities.

SCR 1015 – Kern – OPPOSE – Would ban a laundry list of culture ware conspiracy theories.

SCR 1019 – Kern and HCR 2056 – Montenegro – OPPOSE – Enshrines racism in the constitution

SCR 1020 – Mesnard -OPPOSE – Automatically extends the previous year’s budget if lawmakers don’t pass one in time.

SCR 1023 – Mesnard – OPPOSE – Amending the Constitution to require cities and school districts hold their elections on general election days only.

SCR 1027 – Mesnard – OPPOSE – Top-down mandate version of Prop 123 that restrict funds to “eligible teachers” rather than the many needs of public schools.

SCR 1034 – Hoffman – OPPOSE – Barring district and charter schools from reducing teacher salaries even if they do not have the funds

SCR 1036 – Wadsack – OPPOSE – Putting an end to “at-large” city council members.

SCR 1037 – Wadsack – OPPOSE – Repealing charter cities in Arizona with fewer than 500,000 residents – because the legislature cannot as easily preempt their laws.

SCR 1041 – Mesnard – OPPOSE – Allows anyone to sue to knock a citizen initiative off the ballot on grounds that it is not constitutional.

SCR 1043 – Gowan – OPPOSE – Banning “at-large” city council members as well as rank-choice voting and top-two voting on the city level.

SCR 1044 – Gowan – OPPOSE – Making many AZ judges apponted for life and voiding the entire judicial retention slate on our November ballots.

HCR 2050 – Griffin – OPPOSE – Banning Arizona, its cities and counties and its public schools from banning gas cars or gas stoves.

HCR 2052 – McGarr – OPPOSE – Allowing the legislature to block agency rulemaking, preventing state agencies from doing their jobs.

HCR 2060 – Toma – OPPOSE – Forcing cities and counties to confirm the “lawful presence” of all their employees and subcontractors or commit a Class 6 felony.
