O’Halleran Votes to Fund Military, VA, and Critical Arizona Water Projects After Voting Twice to Amend the Bill to Eliminate Funding for Border Wall

WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) voted to pass the Make America Secure Appropriations Act, 2018, a bipartisan spending bill that funds military operations, veterans programs, and water projects. “Congress took bipartisan action today to invest in our troops and ensure our military has the resources they need to complete critical national security missions at home and abroad,” said Rep. O’Halleran. “This legislation secures our nation, gives our troops a well-deserved pay raise, and increases funding to care for our veterans.”

O’Halleran voted twice to remove $1.6 billion in funding for a border wall that was included in the bill without debate or discussion by the entire House of Representatives. Then he was forced to vote for the bill in order to get projects for Northern Arizona accomplished. The bill gives troops a 2.4% pay raise and increases funding for housing construction and medical facilities for our servicemembers. It also funds the Army Corps of Engineers, including the Winslow levee project, Rio de Flag flood control project, and the Lower Santa Cruz River project.

“As I have said before, our immigration system must be reformed through a bipartisan process that includes an investment in 21st-century technology and additional support for border patrol agents,” O’Halleran said in opposition to the border wall funding. “These are proven methods that secure our border. A border wall is not. House leadership should not be using legislative gimmicks to circumvent regular order and divide Congress on the final passage of a bill that is so critical to our national security.”
