STATUS UPDATE
- The Arizona state House has given itself a two week vacation and will not return to action until May 15.
- Governor Hobbs might be weakening on her resistance to a Republican push for a terrible requirement to be included in the budget. Specifically, the requirement to publish an election-cast vote record or ballot images that violate voter privacy and destroys our right to a secret ballot and weakens the integrity of safe and secure elections. This idea is designed to generate more mistrust in our democracy. Governor Hobbs vetoed this measure last year and she must stick to her guns and insist that she will not support this effort. Let the Governor know you support her decision to reject this Republican effort!
- USE RTS!!
- HCR 2060 – Toma – OPPOSE – This is a new striker that would make it a state crime to cross a federal border without he required documentation and give local police immunity to arrest migrants crossing the border. This echoes the notorious SB1070 and conflicts with a 2012 US Supreme Court ruling that said Arizona has no right to enforce federal immigration laws. Governor Hobbs vetoed a similar bill earlier this year. This is designed to be placed directly on the November ballot as a way to appeal to the far right and further clutter up an already crowded ballot.
- Governor Hobbs vetoed HB 2124 this week. This bill would have made it very hard to protect groundwater and other water sustaining efforts.
- Arizona’s 11 fake electors, including two sitting state legislators, were indicted on April 24, along with 7 additional co-conspirators. Some of the defendants will appear in court on May 21!
- Governor Hobbs also vetoed three anti-environmental bills this week (HB 2063, HB 2124, and HB 2591)!!
- The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) intends to issue a permit to Resolution Copper to allow the mining company to deliver water used to dewater their mine facilities at Oak Flat to the New Magma irrigation district where it can be mixed with water from the Colorado and used for irrigation. This is just one more way this mine is harming our region. Go to the Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter website or this link:
to add your name to a petition to ADEQ to oppose this permit.
