STATUS UPDATE
- The AZ Legislature has passed a budget and adjourned for the year! At least they can’t do any more damage.
- The budget involved major cuts across the board to offset the voucher and tax-cut driven budget deficit. Almost nothing was done about the run away voucher program!
- This past week, the legislature added five more ballot measures to our November ballot – making a total of 13 that they have added to the ballot!
- SCR 1012 – would ban AZ agencies from creating rules without legislative approval (would make running the government almost impossible)
- SCR 1023 – Amends the constitution to require cities and school districts to hold elections on the general election day only.
- SCR 1040 – Amends the constitution to create a sub-minimum hourly wage for tipped employees
- SCR 1041 – Amends the constitution to allow anyone to sue to knock off a citizen initiative – would practically halt citizen initiatives going forward.
- SCR 1044 – Amends the constitution to keep judges appointed until the mandatory retirement age of 70 – aimed specifically to protect the two AZ Supreme Court judges who approved the 1864 abortion ban.
- Email the Governor at to encourage her to veto a number of last minute bills sent by the Legislature this week:
- SB 1155 – would establish a minimum sentence for sexual offenses
- SB 1370 – would ban cities from licensing business by youths under 18 – aimed to prop up for-profit fairs tied to private schools and pro-voucher lobbyists.
- HB 2017 – would allow builders to mix groundwater with river water to circumvent water restrictions on developments
- HB 2376 – would block private individuals from selling or giving property to the federal government without legislative approval – aimed to stop executive action to set aside land for national monuments.
- HB 2389 – would ban the use of passive driver alcohol detection systems to prevent drunk driving situations.
- HB 2719 – would require a 60% approval school bonds and overrides to pass – effectively stop any passage of needed school bonds and overrides.
- SB 1511 – would cause considerable confusion and intimidation of insurance companies in cases of transgender coverage.
- Universal vouchers account for about half of the $1.3 Billion budget shortfall over the next two years. According to the nonpartisan Grand Canyon Institute 82% of those using the universal voucher program NEVER attended a public or charter school before.
