- Demand our Senators actively OPPOSE the SAVE Act! The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act has been passed by the House and is now being considered in the Senate. The act aims to ban noncitizens from voting in federal elections – this is a redundant and dangerous measure since it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote. The bill will introduce additional hurdles, which are likely to disproportionately affect marginalized communities, including many minority groups. Past implementation of similar laws have led to eligible voters being wrongly purged from voter rolls. The true intent of the SAVE Act is to suppress the votes of communities of color and undermines the electoral process. By creating unnecessary hurdles for voter registration and implementing aggressive voter roll purges, this legislation will disproportionately impact Latino, Black, and other minority groups. Insist our Senators REJECT the SAVE Act and do all they can to thwart Republican attempts to further compromise our voting system!
- Urge our Members of Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Acts NOW!! July 17 marks the fourth anniversary of the death of Congressman John Lewis. His contributions to civil rights are immense: from leading the march for the right to vote in Selma, AL in 1965 to his work to ensure the landmark Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts passed into law. Today, the right to vote that John Lewis fought relentlessly for is under threat! In the past decade, about 100 laws have been passed that increase barriers to voting. Attacks on voting rights through dangerous legislation like these disproportionately impact predominantly Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities. Every American deserves the right to exercise their right to speak up for our wildlife, air, water, the economy, and other issues that matter to them. Congress MUST pass these acts to defend the right for ALL Americans to vote freely and fairly!!
