A. Insist our Senators demand the USDA fix its backlog of food distribution to Native American tribes! USDA Secretary, Thomas Vilsack, has moved the USDA last spring to consolidate from two contractors to one for deliveries of its Food Distribution Program in Native American reservations. As a result of this action the food distribution program has not fulfilled orders for months, in some cases the deliveries have been of expired food. More than 50,000 Native American families rely on this food. The USDA has provided USDA staff to assist the single contractor and is partnering with FEMA to help the company’s logistics program but it is not enough, nor fast enough. Ask our Senators to urge Secretary Vilsack to fix this self-made food distribution problem ASAP!
B. Ask our Members of Congress to fully support the Farm System Reform Act! Huge industrial-scale factory farms put people’s health and the food supply at risk. They pollute drinking water and the environment, they wreck rural communities, and the fuel climate change – all while increasing corporate control over our food. Senator Cory Booker and Representative Ro Khanna introduced the Farm System Reform Act to put an immediate stop to new factory farm. The act would put a moratorium on new and expanding large factory farms, it would phase out large factory farms by 2040, it would enforce environmental laws on existing factory farms, it would provide support for people operating factory farms to transition to more sustainable forms of agriculture and would bring fairness to agricultural markets through antitrust enforcement. Insist our representatives support the Farm System Reform Act!!
