- Ask our Senators to work with their Republican colleagues to pass H.R. 4250 – the “Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act” or the PRESS Act before Trump takes over. This measure would limit federal law enforcement surveillance of journalists and the government’s ability to force disclosure of journalists’ sources, codifying regulations the Department of Justice has put in place under President Biden. Trump has posted on Truth Social, “REPUBLICANS MUST KILL THIS BILL!” (all caps of course). With Democrats prioritizing confirmation of Biden’s judicial nominees, it is unlikely they would bring a vote on the measure without the unanimous consent of all 100 senators. So, it might not happen. However, given Trump’s fantasizing aloud during his campaign about reporters beings shot there is much to be worried about. It’s pretty clear that Trump in his second term will make good on his threats to try to destroy any news outlet, journalist, or whistleblower who criticizes or opposes him. Almost certainly, Trump will repeal protections against surveillance the DOJ has put in place. This is a critical item that our Senators should focus on to at least try to put in place protections for our journalists!!
- Demand our Senators strongly OPPOSE H.R. 9495 “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act”!! This act would allow the President to SHUT DOWN any nonprofit organization whose First Amendment-protected speech he deems a threat to the county. It would give the Treasury Secretary the power to strip tax-exempt status from nonprofits that have provided support to terrorist organizations. It is already completely illegal for nonprofits to support terrorism. The bill would allow the Treasury Secretary to remove tax-exempt status from any nonprofit they want to, without having to disclose ANY reasoning or evidence used to make that decision. There is virtually NO OVERSIGHT! Trump would use this bill to retaliate against, and effectively shut down, any nonprofit that he doesn’t like with NO ACCOUNTABILITY. Demand our Senators do all they can to REJECT this horrendous bill!!
- Let Senator Chuck Schumer know how disgusted you are that he allowed Trump to fill four higher-level circuit court picks in January! Senator Schumer cut a deal with Republicans to give these prime judicial slots to Trump so that Republicans would stop trying to thwart the confirmation of President Biden’s judicial nominees. The rationale was that the Democrats didn’t think they had the votes for these four higher level nominees given the time constraints they had. It seems apparent that this is probably just cover. Senator Schumer more likely didn’t want to have to keep the Senate in session over the holidays to guarantee enough time to confirm all the appointments. It just smells of absolutely pathetic appeasement. If you agree, please let Senator Schumer know how you feel!!
