STATUS UPDATE

  • The AZ Senate is focused on passing HCR 2060, a bill that unconstitutionally reassigns federal immigration responsibilities to the state – classifying crossing the border in Arizona as a state crime.  It would allow state officials to deport border crossers among other features.  This is almost identical to the infamous SB 1070 of 10 years ago.  The bill is likely to cost Arizona $350 million per year if implemented.  Republicans are still wrangling over the details of the bill but it is likely to get passed to the House next week for a vote.  If passed it will be directly added to our November ballot and will not be eligible for the Governor’s veto.
  • Another ballot initiative that is emerging is a striker for HCR 2056.  The official language of the measure is not yet available but it is thought to be an effort to severely restrict early ballot drop-off times or deadlines so as to have a major unfavorable impact on mail in voting.  The measure is being strongly supported by our own Wendy Rogers so that gives you an idea of how bad it is. Try to use RTS on this since it is likely to be covered in committee this week.
  • It would be a good idea to reach out to all of our state representatives to insist that any budget development they agree to include a serious revision to the ESA voucher program.  Currently this program is at least $1 Billion dollars over spent and is being used by some 75% of participants by wealthy students who haven’t gone to public schools anyway.
