HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!
Here are some bills that support women that would have moved in the AZ Legislature IF we had voted in a Democratic Majority but have NEVER seen the light of day. Call our legislators and let them know that their days are numbered!!
SCR1012 – Would have ratified the proposed Equal Rights amendment – never assigned or heard.
HB2102 – Would have required AZ Medicare program, among other things, to provide 1 year of postpartum coverage for women and their children. Assigned to committee but NEVER put on an agenda.
HB2261 – Was a package of reforms for incarcerated women – passed the House UNANIMOUSLY but NEVER given a hearing in the Senate.
HB2630 – Would have established a Maternal Mental Health Advisory Committee to recommend improvements for treating maternal mental health disorders – NEVER heard or assigned.
Don’t get overwhelmed! Keep on fighting as best you can!!

SB1532 – OPPOSE – With a new amendment, would subject AZ teachers to a $5,000 fine if they allow classroom discussions on “controversial” topics such as racism, or fail to give EQUAL weight to both sides of “divisive” issues. That means they would have to provide positive sides to Climate Change, Slavery, 9/11, and the Holocaust!!! CALL OUR SENATOR ASAP!!
SB1485 – OPPOSE – This bill has been killed TWICE this year but it is back!! It’s the PEVL Purge! It is estimated it would purge some 225,000 voters from the PEVL. If you fail to mail back your early ballots for two general elections in a row you will be kicked off the PEVL!! CALL OUR SENATOR ASAP!!
HB2035 – OPPOSE – USE RTS ON THIS ONE!!! – This is a striker that is being pushed in the Senate as one of the most restrictive sex-ed law in the nation!! It was ALREADY VETOED BY THE GOVERNOR AS SB 1456!! The bill bans sex-ed and AIDS instruction before the 5th grade and bans discussion of gender identity and expression without parental consent. This bill was originated by a Scottsdale-based anti-LGBTQ hate group.
SCR1044 – SUPPORT – Asks voters to make students who attended high school in Arizona for 2 years before graduating eligible for in-state tuition regardless of their immigration status! CALL OUR LEGISLATORS!!
HB2427 – OPPOSE – EDUCATION – A Striker that revives SB 1685 that would remove attendance boundaries for schools. AZ already has generous open enrollment policies – this bill is unnecessary and destructive. CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS!
SB1783 – OPPOSE – EDUCATION -Would allow small businesses to use an alternative income tax that is estimated to cut the revenue raised by Prop 208 by $527 Million! CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS!
SB1452 – OPPOSE – EDUCATION – A huge expansion of the Educational Scholarship Assistance (ESA) voucher program to about 2/3 of all Arizona school children – it allows money to be taken from public schools and used for private schooling, among other things. Would drain Prop 208 funds! CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS!
HB2248 – OPPOSE – ENVIROMENT – Would prohibit the Corporation Commission from regulating critical electrical generation resources without legislative authorization! CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS!
HB2551 – OPPOSE – RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP – Would allow anyone with concealed weapon permits to bring guns into libraries, community centers , public pools, state museums, the DMV, government offices, block parties, marches and street fairs – even if asked to turn over their firearms for storage!! Anyone can get a concealed weapon permit with no training! CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS!
HB2309 – OPPOSE – DEMOCRACY – This is an anti-protestor bill – making it a felony for violent or disorderly assembly – to be determined by the Police without oversight – clearly meant to discourage first amendment protests by groups the legislators don’t like. CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS!!
SB1680 – SUPPORT – Provides for new-born screening and up to date testing to identify disorders that can be treated if detected sooner. CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS!!
ON THE GOVERNOR’S DESK
SB1105 – OPPOSE – VOTER SUPPRESSION – Would increase the summary printed atop ballot measrues from 100 to 200 words – will make petitions more crowded with less room for signatures and is clearly a ploy to weaken citizen initiatives. ASK GOV DUCEY TO VETO!
HB2462 – OPPOSE – CRIMINAL JUSTICE – Would force people to take extensive training (80 hours) before serving on civilian review boards – would severely limit ability to get good candidates to volunteer to review police misconduct. Crafted by the Arizona Police Association. ASK GOV DUCEY TO VETO!!
SB1382 – OPPOSE – RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP – Would redefine firearms and ammunition as “essential businesses” and has now been amended to exempt the gun lobby from nearly all civil liability. Backed by the NRA it would mean the Arizonans will remain helpless to hold gun makers accountable for irresponsible practices. ASK GOV DUCEY TO VETO!!
