Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans announced today that she will run for Arizona House from Legislative District 6. She’s the first Democratic candidate to announce for the House race. Felicia French is running for the Arizona Senate seat, having made her announcement in February before hitting the Arizona Trail.
In making her announcement, Evans said:
There is a disconnect between our state representatives and local municipalities. We believe in self responsibility and personal responsibility but we also know that we are stronger together,” Evans said. “That is the Arizona I grew up in and the Arizona I see every day across northern Arizona. What I see down in the Capitol is not that.
Therefore, Evans said one of her priorities is bringing the local perspective back to the Capitol and provide clarity to the legislature as to what the role of the state is versus the role of the local government. Evans said other priorities are funding for education, water conservation, encouraging small businesses and better distributing transportation money to every part of the state.
Evans is a third-generation Arizonan who has served as vice president of Mission Services for Goodwill Industries of Northern Arizona and Executive Director of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association of Flagstaff, Inc.
In 2008, Evans became a city councilmember, and then became mayor of Flagstaff in 2016. Her campaign website is https://www.coralevansaz.com/
