Federal Action Alert – December 5, 2022

Produced by the Legislative Committee of the Coconino County Democratic Party and Democrats of the Red Rocks

A. We must repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) Against Iraq!! We have a chance to get this done this year after 20 years!! George W. Bush used
questionable information to get congress to pass this authorization in 2002. This gave
the green light to a military intervention in Iraq that resulted in destroying the lives of
millions of people. Many of us knew then that this war was a mistake. As long as this
AUMF remains on the books a president may once again use it to try and start a war
that the public doesn’t want and Congress hasn’t voted on. In fact, Donald Trump used
the ’02 AUMF as justification to assassinate Iranian general Qasem Soleimani – bringing
the US and Iran dangerously close to an all our war. The House has already acted to
repeal this Authorization and it’s now up to the Senate to make it happen. Demand our
Senators work to get the repeal of AUMF accomplished!!

B. Democrats must raise the debt ceiling NOW to stop the GOP from holding our
economy hostage.
Raising the debt ceiling, once considered a routine duty of Congress
to pay our bills – bills that have already been approved through formal votes, is now
used by Republicans as an opportunity to threaten and extort concessions from
Democrats. The GOP has already threatened, if they capture a majority in the House, to
hold the debt ceiling hostage while demanding cuts in essential programs like Social
Security and Medicaid. If Democrats raise the debt ceiling during this lame duck session,
they can deprive the GOP of a chance to hold the country hostage over the next two
years. Democrats must stand up to Republican obstruction before it starts and use
their respective powers to end this Republican manufactured crisis before it begins!!

C. We need to enact the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition
Improvement Act of 2022!
This act, which has already passed the House, has bi-
partisan support and will go a long way to solidify the process of certifying electoral
ballots. It will make it much harder for anyone to game the system and try to
circumvent the will of the people in Presidential elections. Among many upgrades the
act specifies the role of the Vice President during the joint session shall be ministerial in
nature. It’s important to get this done!

D. The House must complete its work and establish a non-voting delegate seat for the
Cherokee Nation.
Such an act was promised in the Treaty of New Echota of 1835. That
treaty led to the expulsion of the Cherokees from their homeland and forced them to
move West on the Trail of Tears, where one-quarter of the Cherokee population
perished! The treaty guaranteed the Cherokee people a right to send a delegate to
Congress. This effort has broad bi-partisan support and its finally time for the United
States to honor its commitment to the Cherokee people.
