FEDERAL ACTION ALERT – February 5, 2024

Produced by Coconino County Democratic Party

  1. Ask our Representative, Eli Crane, why he voted AGAINST the Child Tax Credit Expansion!  AND insist our Senators vote to pass this measure when it gets to the Senate! The House passed a bipartisan tax bill that could help 16 million low-income children.  The vote was 357 to 70.  Eli Crane was one of the 70 who voted against it.  This measure could lift as many as half a million kids out of poverty.  Republican Senators are making noise that they are opposed to the measure.  Senator Chuck Grasley, for example, doesn’t want President Biden to “look good mailing out checks before the election.”  (No checks get mailed out on this – it’s a tax credit that shows up in tax refunds after people file).  So, it seems some Senators are more interested in helping Donald Trump than poor kids.  Why did Eli Crane vote against it and insist our Senators support it!!
  1. Ask President Biden to fix the harmful Betsy DeVos Title IX rule ASAP!  Betsy DeVos implemented a Title IX rule that uprooted decades of policy and significantly weakened civil protections for student survivors of sexual harassment and violence.  Under the DeVos rule, many students who suffered sexual harassment have had their Title IX complaints dismissed by their schools or have been subjected to unfair, burdensome, and retraumatizing investigation procedures that are not required for any other type of student or staff misconduct.  Insist that President Biden finalize and publish a new Title IX rule as soon as possible!
  1. Insist the EPA eliminate lead in school drinking water fountains!  The EPA has proposed a 10-year deadline for most water utilities to fully replace lead service lines.  This is a good first step but it wont address the lead-laden fixtures that already exist inside schools and child care facilities.  The agency’s proposed updates won’t require schools to install water stations with filters to remove toxic lead from the water.  It is well documented that exposure to lead impairs development , learning and behavior in children.  Fortunately, the solution is straightforward.  Replace the lead-bearing fountains in schools with new water stations that have filters to capture lead coming from school plumbing.  Comments to the EPA on this issue MUST be done by Monday, February 5!! So there is little time.  Use this link to describe your comments to get them to put in filtered water stations in schools:
