A. Demand that our Representatives support a clean raising of the debt ceiling ASAP!!
Janet Yellen, Treasury Secretary, has indicated that the Treasury Department has already
begin taking extraordinary measures to avoid a catastrophic default! These measure are
expected to suffice until June when the US could default if the debt ceiling is not raised.
The last time Republicans help the debt ceiling hostage was 2011 and while the debt
ceiling was raised in time, the hostage taking stance by Republicans resulted in the only
credit rating downgrade in the history of our country! Republicans intend to use the
threat of refusing to raise the debt limit (the amount the Treasury can borrow for debts
already authorized by Congress!!) so that they can get spending concessions –
specifically to reduce spending on Social Security and Medicare. One of their objectives
is to raise the retirement age to 70 from 65. Each year the retirement age is increased
in Social Security reduces average benefits by 7% – so a five year increase could
reduce expected Social Security benefits by 35%!!! WE MUST RAISE THE DEBT
LIMIT ASAP WITHOUT threats to Medicare and Social Security!!
B. Get our Senators to support the Reproductive Freedom for All Act! The
Reproductive Freedom for All Act would codify the core protections of Roe into federal
law. It would also guarantee access to contraceptives and enshrine elements of other
Supreme Court decisions involving reproductive rights.
According to the text of the bill, the court has long held that the provisions of equal
protection and due process under the law contained in the 14th Amendment guarantee the right to make certain reproductive decisions without government interference.
Republican senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Maine’s Susan Collins along with
Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine, and Kristin Sinema are co-sponsors.
Supporters say the bill is crucial in order to protect people’s ability to make their own
healthcare decisions regardless of where they live. Demand our Representatives do all
they can to get this act passed!!
