- Support the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Act! This act was submitted by Senator Mark Kelly and Representative Raul Grijalva this past week. This act would ratify an agreement with the Navajo Nation, Hopi and San Juan Southern Paiute tribes to provide greater water certainty for this arid region. The settlement provides guaranteed access to more than 56,000 acre-feet of Colorado River water to these tribes. The Act includes $5 Billion funding for building and maintaining water development and delivery projects. Included in this act is the establishment of a reservation in northern Arizona and southern Utah for the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe – the only federally recognized tribe in Arizona that does NOT have its own homeland!! Insist that our remaining Arizona Congress Members fully support this water settlement act and provide a homeland to the San Juan Paiute people!!
- Demand our Congress Members approve full SNAP benefits in the next Farm Bill! SNAP refers to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – previously referred to as “Food Stamps”. There is an effort to restrict and limit the types of foods that are eligible for SNAP purchases. Such an effort would add administrative burdens to those in need and their suppliers. In addition it violates the autonomy and dignity of people using SNAP by making it harder for these people to meet household budgets, cultural preferences and specific dietary needs. These restrictions perpetuates a stereotype rooted in the false narrative that SNAP participants cannot be trusted to make healthy choices – which is simply not true! Such limitations ignore the reality of what food and retail options are available in local communities, especially those service rural families, remote areas and communities within food deserts. Urge our lawmakers to protect SNAP food options in the next farm bill!!
