FEDERAL ACTION ALERT – July 29, 2024

Produced by Coconino County Democratic Party

  • Urge our Congressional Members to restore and strengthen federal agencies to effectively regulate!  In June the US Supreme Court overturned the Chevron doctrine, which deferred to experts at agencies like the EPA to interpret complex laws.  By gutting the EPA’s authority to tackle climate change and keep our air and water clean, the Supreme Court opened the door to a new wave of legal challenges to our fundamental environmental protections.  The court reversed 40 years of legal precedent in a major victory for fossil fuel interests.  Now judges, with no professional background in highly technical areas will have the final say in interpreting complex environmental laws.  We need to call on Congress to: 1.  Reaffirm and enhance the authority of the EPA and other federal agencies to address climate change and environmental issues, 2) Ensure that these agencies can effectively implement regulations based on the latest scientific research and technological advancements, and 3) provide clear guidance to prevent regulatory ambiguity and legal challenges that undermine environmental protections.  Congress MUST act to allow federal agencies to utilize expert science to regulate actions across the country – not judges!
  • BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS!!  America got yet another reminder of how deadly assault weapons can be as one person lost their life and two others were seriously injured during the assassination attempt on Trump.  Assault weapons, with their high capacity for rapid-fire and extensive damage, are a clear and present danger to public safety.  Republican unwavering opposition to gun reforms demonstrates a broader issue: the normalization of assault weapons in American society.  Assault weapons have been repeatedly used in mass shootings, resulting in devastating loss of life and trauma.  Such firearms are designed for maximum lethality, making them unsuitable for civilian use.  We must unite as a nation to call for a ban on assault weapons – this is not about politics – it is about protecting lives!
  • CEASE FIRE IN GAZA!  The death toll in Gaza is nearing 40,000 with no end to the Israeli military’s assault in sight.  Meanwhile, state-sanctioned settler violence in the West Bank is also at an all-time high.  The nature of the battlefield is characterized by Israeli soldiers having a near total absence of firing regulations – with troops shooting as they please.  There is growing evidence of serious instances of torture and abuse of Palestinians held in detention centers as well.  Reach out to President Biden, once again, to strongly urge his continued efforts to affect a realistic cease fire in Gaza!!
  • Demand our Senators reject HR 8771 – Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Appropriations for 2025!  This bill which passed the House on 6/24, reflects significant funding cuts to Department of State.  Department of State needs resources to effectively respond to violent conflicts, climate change shocks, and discrimination internationally and at home.  Investments in life-sustaining aid are critical.  Insist our Senators reject HR 8771 and instead invest in human rights, humanitarian aid, international climate finance, and poverty-focused development assistance!
  • Ask our Senators to support S 4684 – Bridge to Medicaid Act!  There are 1.6 Million Americans who have no health insurance in states that have failed to expand Medicaid.  With the expiration of pandemic-era provisions, one in four Americans who lost coverage are without health coverage.  We must support our neighbors with incomes too high for Medicaid but too low to qualify for aid in purchasing health insurance.  Ask our Senators to support the Bridge to Medicaid Act!!
