FEDERAL ACTION ALERT –May 22, 2023
A. Demand our House Representative support the EACH Act!!! The Each Act is the Equal
Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance. This is the first piece of abortion
access legislation introduced in the new Congress. It would end the Hyde Amendment –
an archaic, decades-old provision that bans abortion coverage for people enrolled in
Medicaid and other federal programs – and the EACH Act would prohibit the federal
government from interfering with private insurance companies that choose to cover
abortion care. Insist that our representative support the EACH Act!!
B. Join the Grand Canyon Tribal Council in asking President Biden to establish a new
monument. The one at issue is called Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon
National Monument. It would protect over one million acres adjacent to the Grand
Canyon National Park. Baaj Navajo means “where tribes roam” for the Havasupai
Tribe, and I’tah Kukveni means “our footprints” for the Hopi Tribe.
C. Join Feeding America and ask all of our Representatives/Senators to help seniors get
the nutritious food they need!! In 2021 1 in 14 seniors experienced food insecurity in
the U.S. We need Congress to reauthorize the Commodity Supplemental Food Program
(CSFP) in the 2024 Food Act. This funding will maintain the current case load of 760,000
participants and provide the flexibility to expand the program to serve more older
adults. Reauthorize the CSFP!!
D. Ask our House Representative to support the Discharge Petition to cleanly raise the
Debt Ceiling! House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has initiated a Discharge Petition
to raise the Debt Ceiling – this is a grass roots effort to get 218 Congress members to
sign which would force a vote. If all 213 Democratic members sign then we only need 5
Republicans to sign to get a vote on a clean raise to the debt ceiling. We need to end
this artificial crises and move on to really important issues!!
