DC Statehood: S. 51 would make Washington DC a state. DC is primarily African American and has a greater population than three other states. S. 51 is co -sponsored by 44 senators BUT NOT OURS.
Sample voice mail for either Senator: “My name is XXXX and I live in XXXXX. I was happy to vote for you, but frankly I’m shocked that you are not one of the 44 Democratic Party senators co-sponsoring S. 51, the bill that would make Washington DC a state. Why? DC is majority black and has a larger population than three other states! At a time when we need all hands on board to defeat racism you stand silent. Please take a stand – the right stand – and co-sponsor S. 51.”
Voting Rights (Yes, we’ve done it before but we need to keep hammering away!
For Senators Kelly and Sinema:
Please contact both Senators AGAIN and ask them to co-sponsor the “For the People Act” and the “John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act” and let them know their efforts are almost meaningless without their support for the removal of the filibuster.
Sample voice mail or email FOR EITHER SENATOR: “My name is XXXX and I live in XXXXX, Arizona. Voting rights are under attack in Florida, Texas and Arizona and we are losing our democracy. We urgently need your maximum support of the For the People Act (S1) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act” (S4).
Please support removing or modifying the filibuster so that this travesty can be corrected. It’s time to admit the attempt to round up 10 Republican senators who care about making voting access easy and secure is lost.
Sen. Sinema: Call (202) 224-4521 (DC) or (602) 598-7327. Email via her website at “http://www.sinema.senate.gov” Tag the Senator at @senatorsinema,
Sen. Mark Kelley: Call (202) 224-2235 (DC), Email via his website at http://www.kelly.senate.gov Tag the Senator at @senmarkkelly
For Representative O’Halleran: Stop funding private prisons. The “Justice Is Not For Sale Act”. Representative O’Halleran still is not co-sponsoring the bill that would eliminate federal funding for private prisons. In fact, he took money from the private prison industry in Arizona during one of his recent campaigns. Let him know we don’t like this.
Script: “My name is XXXX and I live in XXXXX, Arizona.
Thank you for your work. I am urging you to join Rep. Gallego in supporting and co sponsoring Rep. Grijalva’s HB994 “Justice is Not for Sale Act” that would eliminate for profit private prisons. I am further requesting that in the future, you not accept any future contributions from the private prison lobby including from the Management Training Corporation who run the state prison in Marana. I was disappointed to learn you had taken their money. For profit prisons should have no place in our criminal justice system.”
Rep. O’Halleran: Call (202) 225-3361 or send an email via his website at http://www.ohalleran.house.gov
