- Demand Congress come back into session and pass funding to FULLY support Hurricane Helene relief efforts NOW!! Americans in the Southeastern US are struggling to cope with the wreckage caused by Hurricane Helene. At least 140 people have died and hundreds more are missing. The death toll could reach 600 and more than 2 million remain without power. The hurricane pummeled Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee devastating many homes and communities. Congress is currently out of session through November 12, but relief can’t wait. We must demand our Congress Members do what they can to get back into session and fully fund FEMA!
B. We must absolutely demand that our Congress Members fully support the No Kings Act – making sure that no one is above the law, not even current and former presidents. The dangerous “absolute immunity” ruling from our Supreme Court could let Trump off the hook in all of his criminal charges. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has introduced the No Kings Act to counter the disastrous decision from the Supreme Court that threw out centuries of precedent and anointed Trump and subsequent presidents as kings above the law. Demand our Congress Members overturn the disastrous right-wing SCOTUS decision to give American presidents absolute immunity by passing Senator Schumer’s No Kings Act!!
C. Ask our Congress Members to support the Yavapai-Apache Nation Water Rights Settlement Act of 2024 AND the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Act of 2024!! These bills would provide pipelines and other infrastructure on Native American lands and ensure that pumping restrictions were in place to ensure groundwater is not depleted. These measures would resolve the uncertainty around tribal water claims that have existed since 1922. These bills were introduced by Senators Mark Kelly and Krysten Sinema. The intent is to provide running water to many Native American homes for the first time. Included in these bills is the establishment of a reservation for the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, making the homeless no more! Reach out to our Congress Members to support these important Native American water rights settlement acts!!
D. Ask our Congress Members to reauthorize and fully fund the Secure Rural Schools and Roads Act!! This measure was instituted by Franklyn Roosevelt in the 30’s to ensure that rural schools had sufficient funds to provide quality education services. It needs to be reauthorized every few years and is often a part of the Farm Bill. This funding provides a great deal of the annual budgets for many rural schools. It isn’t a lot of money, with about $3 million for Coconino County and about $12 Million for all of CD 2. However is it critical to support rural schools. Please ask our Representatives to support this measure, reauthorize it for at least one year but better yet for 10 years so that it doesn’t become a political pawn.
