FEDERAL ACTION ALERT –October 9, 2023
A. Demand Senator Tommy Tuberville stop his tantrum over DOD (Department of Defense) policy covering travel expenses for service members seeking abortions!
Senator Tuberville, Alabama, has blocked over 300 military promotions so far. Our military will continue to operate but this single Senator’s tantrum is costing servicemembers and their families. People are taking on work they are not compensated for, it will impact their retirement benefits, and its created financial and logistical burdens for troops’ families. Senator Tuberville has stalled all high-level military promotions since February to protest the Pentagon’s new reproductive health policies. Five members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are required by law to leave their posts over the next three months. Tuberville is playing games with our national security and the well-being of our troops. He’s threatening national security! Tell him to knock it off!!!!
B. Urge our Representatives (House and Senate) to support the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies in the US Act! This bill would establish the first formal commission to investigate the horrific past and impact of the 367 federally sponsored, faith-run institutions that existed until the 1960’s. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Christian churches collaborated with the government to create boarding schools for Native American children. The conditions were unspeakable. They attempted to force assimilation by terminating Native American culture and languages. The bill to establish the Commission was introduced in May of this year by Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA). We must continue to push for this act’s full approval ASAP!
C. Thank President Biden for establishing the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument! The title of the monument means “where Indigenous peoples roam, our ancestral footprints” in Havasupai and Hopi languages. The monument will protect over 900,000 acres of public land near Grand Canyon National Park. The monument honors the deep cultural connection that Indigenous Peoples have to the region and secures the Colorado River watershed. Let President Biden know we strongly support his action and appreciate what he and his
administration are doing!!
