FEDERAL ACTION ALERT – September 30, 2024

Produced by Coconino County Democratic Party

A. Tell Congress!  No more child poverty!  Expand the Child Tax Credit!!  In the US, nearly one in seven children grows up in poverty.  This is a policy choice because we know how to fix it.  The American Rescue Plan changed the longstanding child tax credit: expanding it to $3,600 and removing income requirements.  Some families got as much as $300 per child per month, deposited directly into their bank accounts.  They spent that on groceries, rent, bills – whatever they needed to survive.  Three million children were lifted out of poverty!!  With the policy lapsed, 2023 showed a return to “normal” with 13.7% of children living in poverty – mostly represented by black and Latinx children.   If the policy had been continued the poverty rate would have been 8.6%!  Tell our Congressional representatives to expand the child tax credit ASAP!!

B. Demand Congress increase investments in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)!  This program serves seniors but it’s scope depends on its funding level.  The latest USDA data shows that nearly 7 million seniors faced hunger in 2022.  CSFP connects seniors with the nutritious food they need to thrive.  The program provides packages filled with fruits, vegetables, healthy grains, meat, cheese and other foods that help older people stay healthy.  Lawmakers must act to make this program as strong as possible by increasing investments in the CSFP and modernize the program in the next farm bill!!

C. Tell Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana what you think of his racists questioning of a key witness at a hate crimes hearing!!  His contact information is: 202-224-4623 or https://www.kennedy.senate.gov/public/email-me-form .   In a string of sneering statements, Kennedy accused Maya Berry – the executive director of the Arab American Institute – of supporting terrorists.  He refused to allow her to respond then ignored what she did say as he continued his attack.  The Senator asked Berry if she supported Hamas, when she said that she did not and made it clear that the question was offensive, Kennedy talked over her and went on as if she hadn’t answered.  He then repeated this act with the militant group Hezbollah, and then Iran!  While Berry responded to Kennedy’s disgusting remarks with the kind of steely grace that so many civil rights leaders have been forced to display over the decades, her treatment in the Senate chamber was shocking!  Tell Senator Kennedy that we know he was well aware that his racist and unfounded attack was designed to appeal to the worst of his reprehensible base and was a huge embarrassment to the United States Senate!
