What does this disastrous presidency teach us? Perhaps that when Russian intelligence agencies, the NRA (of which I’m a life member), our arcane electoral college and apathy combine, these four entities produced results that satisfied about 40% of Americans. Therein lies a deeper lesson.
Our Constitution envisioned an educated and engaged electorate, but only about 60% of us voted in 2016. The destruction of public education seems a well-established de facto GOP policy in both our own state and federal governments; either we don’t learn “civics,” and/or we don’t care. Voter suppression and gerrymandering further tilt the vote count.
The basic lesson is that we need active civic engagement. We are learning the hard way that democracy dies in apathy and ignorance.Advertisement (1 of 1): 0:27
