Eight U.S. Senators — all Democrats — have signed a letter demanding that the President and the Trump Organization answer questions pertaining to profits they are deriving from Donald Trump’s occupancy of the Presidency. The Constitution, in two places, prohibits such profiteering while the President is in office:
Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 of the Constitution states, “[N]o Person holding any Office of
Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present,
Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”
Article II, Clause 7 of the Constitution additionally provides that the President shall receive fixed
compensation during his or her time in office, but “shall not receive within that Period any other
Emolument from the United States, or any of them.”
