STATUS UPDATE
- The Arizona House reconvenes this Tuesday, June 4. It could potentially pass HCR 2060, the new SB 1070. This would but this measure on the November ballot and preclude the Governor from vetoing it. The measure would criminalize immigration, lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost tourism, ligation costs, agricultural losses due to worker shortages. HCR 2060 forces local police and judges to incur massive costs arresting, jailing, adjudicating, and transporting people just seeking to work and live in safety. This unfunded mandate is illegal, unconstitutional and wildly irresponsible. Credible polls suggest that 90% of Arizonans believe that immigration is important to our country and that 77% support a path to citizenship. FLOOD our house members with the demand they OPPOSE HCR 2060!!
- The Governor and the Legislature are working on the budget – they are required to have one done by June 30. It seems the Governor is not fighting hard enough to demand curbs to the terrible school voucher program! Call the Governor at 602-542-4331 and insist:
- It is totally unacceptable to accept a budget that preserves the current voucher program
- Stand with SOS, the Arizona Education Association, and CEBV and demand that taxpayer dollars be spent on public schools not on private school voucher program without any accountability.
- Voucher schools openly promote discrimination and degradation of LGBTQ+ children and families.
- The Arizona Senate will be back in session on June 12. At that time it is likely to take up HCR 2056, a ballot measure that would severely limit voting access. This measure would end election day ballot drop off of mail-in ballots, expand voter ID and result in long lines during record heat. Flood our Arizona Senate members with the demand to OPPOSE HCR 2056!!
