AZ Legislative Alert – April 17, 2023

COCONINO COUNTY DEMOCRATS ARIZONA LEGISLATIVE ALERT

April 17, 2023

Both the Arizona House and Senate have recessed until April 25. They have done this since the House expelled Liz Harris (R-13). The expulsion was done because Ms. Harris wasn’t acting like a “team player”. Her wild accusations accused Republicans and Democrats of being bribed by Mexican Cartels. Ms. Harris will be replaced by the County Commissioners of Maricopa County soon.

Financially, Arizona is in a pickle! The Finance Advisory Committee presented the news that Arizona has no money. This year’s one-time surplus will be completely gone next year and the 2021 tax cuts will result in “net negative growth” going forward.

Rumblings of a bi-partisan budget negotiation process that might be going on have been going around. There are still about 110 terrible bills that are alive and will be dealt with in the coming weeks. Governor Hobbs is ready with her veto pen thank goodness!! There are also 10 ballet referrals that will by-pass the Governor and may be placed on our 2024 ballot – these may be used in the budget negotiations as leverage to gain concessions from Governor Hobbs.
