President DJT issued another executive order – this one banning transgender folks from serving in the military, “in any capacity.”
According to the Washington Post, “Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was supposed to be examining whether to continue former President Barack Obama’s policy of allowing transgender service, and Mattis’s review was due in December. It’s unclear whether Trump simply steamrolled this process to rush forth his ban.”
Senator McCain reacted as follows: “There is no reason to force service members who are able to fight, train, and deploy to leave the military — regardless of their gender identity.” He said there should be no change in policy until the Pentagon completes an ongoing review of the issue.”
@TomPerez tweet on Trump’s transgender ban
To the members of the transgender community: “You are not a ‘burden.’ Do not let this president shake you. We support you, we stand with you.”
Here’s Trump’s executive order – issued via tweet:
“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
We’d like to know which “Generals” he consulted with. Secretary of Defense Mattis certainly wasn’t consulted. Neither was McCain. Reports indicate the first the Pentagon heard of it was by tweet.
This is no way to run a country.
