We continue push our two Senators to do the right thing:
For Senators Kelly and Sinema:
Gun control: SB763 regulating assault weapons and SB591 re background checks.
These bills have just passed in the House and the push is to have the Senate address. If they fail because of the filibuster that failure will be used, along with the failure of major voting rights legislation to justify repealing the filibuster. The more our AZ senators are committed to these bills the more pressure to end the filibuster.
Sample voice mail or email: “My name is XXXX and I live in XXXXX, Arizona.
Thank you for your work. I notice, however, that you are not co sponsoring several bills of real importance regarding common sense gun legislation. These include SB763 which would regulate assault weapons and SB591 to prohibit firearms dealers from selling a firearm before completion of a background check. These common sense efforts are supported by the vast majority of Americans. After so many mass shooting events it should not be hard to support these two bills as a co sponsor.”

For Representative O’Halleran: Support HB994 “Justice Is Not For Sale Act” (Ban private prisons) This bill, drafted by Rep. Grijalva and co-sponsored by Rep. Ruben Gallego would prohibit for-profit entities from running state and local prisons or jails. Here we ask Rep. O’Halleran to support the bill and to stop taking contributions from the private prison industry (FEC filings show he accepted a $1,000 contribution on June 28, 2019 from Management Training Services which runs Arizona’s Marana based prison).
Script: “My name is XXXX and I live in XXXXX, Arizona.
Thank you for your work. I am urging you to join Rep. Gallego in supporting and co sponsoring Rep. Grijalva’s HB994 “Justice is Not for Sale Act” that would eliminate for profit private prisons. I am further requesting that in the future, you not accept any future contributions from the private prison lobby including from the Management Training Corporation who run the state prison in Marana. Private prisons should have no place in our criminal justice system.
Rep. O’Halleran: Call (202) 225-3361 or send an email via his website at http://www.ohalleran.house.gov
* Due to pressure from people like you and others, Sen. Sinema’s office has just confirmed she will co-sponsor major voting rights bills including the “For the People Act” and the “John Lewis Voter Advancement Act.” When these bills fail to pass due to the filibuster this will be more pressure on Sen. Sinema to change her mind on maintaining the filibuster.
