- Demand that our House and Senate Representatives support Social Security – NOT cut it!! Over the past 40 years, Republican politicians and Wall Street funders have been running an insidious campaign to discredit Social Security. Recently, new legislation in the House has surfaced that the White House calls a “death panel for Medicare and Social Security” and is aimed at attacking Social Security and Medicare as the main drivers of ongoing deficits. Perhaps Republicans should remember what Ronald Reagan said about Social Security in 1984: “Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit. Social Security is totally funded by the payroll tax levied on employer and employee.” Over 72% of Americans – including 51% of Republicans – support expanding, not cutting, Social Security by asking millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share. Tell our Representatives: Don’t cut Social Security and Medicare!! Make millionaires and billionaires pay into Social Security all year long!!
- Demand our House Representative pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act ASAP!! When Rep. John Lewis and other civil rights heroes marched in Selma on Bloody Sunday, they helped “shake the nation’s conscience” and get the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965 passed. When the Supreme Court gutted the VRA in 2013 it gave the hyper-partisan politicians a green light to pass unjust, racist, anti-voter bills through state legislatures. This has led to the fact that the gap in voter turnout between white voters and voters of color has grown over the last decade. The Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will restore and modernize the comprehensive protections initially established by the VRA of 1965; they will ban gerrymandering; and they will guarantee popular voting options like early voting, automatic voter registration and vote-by-mail in all 50 states!! It’s time to ACT – demand our Representatives in both the House and the Senate pass these crucial federal voter protections!!
