USMCA?

Republicans are bashing House Democrats for not approving the Trump-negotiated replacement for NAFTA known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Here are the facts:

USMCA as drafted last year left US workers exposed to losing their jobs to Mexico, included unacceptable provisions to lock in high prescription drug prices, fell short on environmental standards and lacked ‘concrete, effective enforcement mechanisms,’ according to Speaker Pelosi. The drug price provisions were a give-away to the Prescription Drug Industry that would make getting affordable prescription drugs even harder for Americans.

Pelosi and her team have been diligently working on negotiating these provisions. Now, she reports, “House Democrats have come ‘within range’ of reaching a North American trade agreement they can support. Now, we need to see our progress in writing from the [Office of the U.S.] Trade Representative for final review.” The ball is back in Trump’s court — does he want a USMCA that benefits the American people, or not.
