FEDERAL ACTION ALERT – July 24, 2022

Produced by The Legislative Committee of the Coconino County Democratic Party and Democrats of the Red Rocks

THIS WEEK’S ALERTS:   Support the passage of the House bills to secure the rights to use contraceptives and to keep same-sex marriage legal, Ask our Senators to support the Hualapai Tribe in their effort to secure sufficient Colorado River water to survive and prosper, Get our Senators on board to support the Women’s Health Protection Act and ask our Representatives to reauthorize the Trade Adjustment Assistance for Workers program.

  1. The Supreme Court recently overturned Roe v. Wade decision from 1971 and the justices and GOP lawmakers are on track to go even further.  “This extremism is about one thing: control of women. We will not let this happen.” Said Rep Kathy Manning, D-N.C.  The House passed a bill this last week to make the use of contraceptives legal and it is not on its way to the Senate.  Over 150 Democrats are co-sponsors of the bill – no Republicans are.  At the same time a bill that ensures that same-sex marriage will remain legal was also passed and sent to the Senate.  The impetus for these efforts comes, in part, from Justice Thomas’ position on the Roe v. Wade decision suggesting that the court should now review other precedents – he mentioned rulings that affirmed the rights of same-sex marriage in 2015, same-sex intimate relationships in 2003 and married couples use of contraceptives in 1965.  We MUST get our Senators on board to support these bills as they are considered in the Senate!!
  1. The Hualapai Chairman Damon Clarke told a Senate committee this past week that getting access to the Colorado River water is “the only feasible solution” for his tribe, whose wells are failing under the stress of the continuing drought.  The Hualapai Tribe Water Rights Settlement Act of 2022 would give the tribe water rights to the Colorado, Verde and Bill Williams rivers and fund construction of water infrastructure that would deliver about 4,000 acre feet of water a year to the tribe.  This effort is supported by both of our Senators and by Tom O’Hallahan in the House.  We need to thank them for their support and urge them to continue the fight to get final passage.
  1. The Trade Adjustment Assistance for Workers program was allowed to lapse on July 1, 2022.  We need our representatives to find a way to get it reauthorized.  The Act provides funding for retraining programs, worker relocation, job-seeking services and more for trade-affected workers – those who lose their jobs when companies relocate operations overseas.  The Labor Department estimates that around 4,500 workers have missed out on the programs’ benefits just since it lapsed this month!!  Normally, almost 100,000 people use this program each year in the past.  With almost 5 million supported by the program since its inception in 1974!!  We MUST get it reauthorized ASAP!!
  1. The Women’s Health Protection Act would stop the Republican onslaught of anti-abortion and abortion-restrictive legislation coming out of state legislatures across the country.  It would block states from creating barriers to care and would protect health service providers’ ability to offer abortion care.  It passed the House in 2021 without a single Republican vote but failed to pass the Senate.  Get our Senators to act to get this bill reconsidered and passed in spite of the filibuster!!!
