Federal Action Alert – March 13, 2022

Produced by Democrats of the Red Rocks and Coconino County Democratic Party

THIS WEEK’S ALERTS:   Agencies to Contribute to in Ukraine War; Urge O’Halleran on the LGBTQ Data Inclusion Act; Push Now for a Climate Change Bill that has Manchin’s Support!; Push Senators to approve the nomination of Judge Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

A.  Agencies Helping Ukrainian Refugees.  Consider a donation to these tax-deductible agencies:

UNICEF  works with civic organizations and local governments to provide nutrition and healthcare for kids in conflict areas.

UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)  At least 84% of donations go toward its field operations or efforts to aid displaced people.  That aid comes in the form of shelter or advocacy. UNHCR says 90% of its staff is based in the field.

International Committee of the Red Cross  In Ukraine since 2014.  Works with the Ukrainian Red Cross Society to provide food, water and other necessities.

Doctors Without Borders helps assess medical needs for Ukrainians without access to healthcare.

International Rescue Committee uses donations to impact the economic wellbeing of families affected by conflict and provide educational opportunities to continue to enrich children during crises.

B.  Support the LGBTQ Data Inclusion Act.  (HR 4176)  Rep. Raul Grijalva has reintroduced this important act which has 116 co-sponsors, but not Rep. Tom O’Halleran.  As Rep. Grijalva stated in a press release, “Our LGBTQ community deserves to be visible and counted so public policy can better reflect their needs. By including voluntary and confidential questions on sexual orientation and gender identity in federal surveys, we can ensure that lawmakers have the data they need to craft policies that remedy the disparities faced by LGBTQ individuals in housing, health, employment, and more.”  Let’s ask Rep. O’Halleran to sign on as a co-sponsor.

Sample voice mail or text to Rep. O’Halleran.  I live and vote in XXXX, Arizona.  I’m surprised that you have not joined 116 of your colleagues in the House to Co-Sponsor the LGBTQ Data Inclusion Act.  Members of the LGBTQ community deserve to be counted in our federal surveys to ensure that policy makers like you can create laws to remedy disparities they face in housing, health and employment.  Please sign on.

Rep. Tom O’Halleran: Call (202) 225-3361 (DC) or email via website at https://ohalleran.house.gov/contact  Tag the Congressman @RepOHalleran

C.  Support climate action – for its own sake and for international security.  Focus on our Senators.  This past week saw the release of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, focusing on climate impacts and adaptation options for policymakers. The overall message – that we need to pursue every avenue for mitigating climate change.  Now Senator Joe Manchin has cracked open the door, signaling an interest in moving forward with a reconciliation bill to combat climate change.  At the same time Russia’s power, deeply rooted in fossil fuels, is being vastly restricted. Rather than returning to all-out extraction of oil and gas in the US (as the fossil fuel companies want us to do), we can weaken Russia’s power long-term while investing in domestic renewables.

Sample voice or email to our people:

My name is XXX and I live and vote in XXXXX, Arizona.  I’ve contacted you before about climate change and how it threatens our children’s future, our current well-being, and our national security. The latest report from the IPCC documents these threats in even more horrific terms. Meanwhile Russia continues to benefit from its dominance in supplying oil and gas to other nations. Please, I urge you – now is the time to start working with Senator Manchin and others to negotiate the strongest possible policy and investment to build true energy independence with renewables for the US – and to weaken Russia’s future economic power. I know that several bills have been introduced to expand US production of oil and gas – but that won’t help our immediate situation, and it is terribly short-sighted. The long-term strategy MUST be to invest in sustainable, renewable energy. Thanks.

Sen. Sinema:  Call (202) 224-4521 (DC) or (602) 598-7327.  Email via her website at “http://www.sinema.senate.gov”  Tag the Senator at @senatorsinema.

  1. Push senators for rapid confirmation of Biden’s Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. President Biden has nominated an exceptional and experienced, thoughtful juror to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court, in the process fulfilling his promise to nominate a Black woman – the first in the Court’s long history. While our Senators have been supportive of the President’s nominees for other court positions, it is crucial that this nomination be swiftly confirmed by the Senate. Senator Sinema has met with Judge Brown Jackson and made some positive comments, but has stopped short of saying she will confirm. Senator Kelly has not issued any statements other than that he looks forward to meeting with the nominee.

Sample voice or email to our people:

My name is xxx and I’m a voter and constituent in YYY, Arizona. I’m calling to urge you to support the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as our newest Supreme Court Justice. Her credentials and experience are outstanding – and her nomination is also an exciting chance to continue bringing more diversity of backgrounds and perspectives to the Supreme Court. I know and appreciate that you’ve been supportive of the President’s judicial nominees over this past year – but I wanted to let you know that I really hope this nomination will move swiftly from the Judiciary Committee to the Senate floor, and I hope you will help complete her confirmation as soon as possible. Thank you.
