FEDERAL ACTION ALERT – September 4, 2022

Produced by The Legislative Committee of the Coconino County Democratic Party and Democrats of the Red Rocks

THIS WEEK’S ALERTS:   Demand that our Representatives PASS the Reproductive Freedom for All Act!!; Insist that our Representatives make it clear that we support the Indian Child Welfare Act!!; Demand that the Global Food Security Act be expanded and renewed!!

  1. Get our Senators to support the Reproductive Freedom for All Act!  The Reproductive Freedom for All Act would codify the core protections of Roe into federal law. It would also guarantee access to contraceptives and enshrine elements of other Supreme Court decisions involving reproductive rights.

According to the text of the bill, the court has long held that the provisions of equal protection and due process under the law contained in the 14th Amendment guarantee the right to make certain reproductive decisions without government interference.

Republican senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Maine’s Susan Collins along with Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine, and Kristin Sinema are co-sponsors.

Supporters say the bill is crucial in order to protect people’s ability to make their own healthcare decisions regardless of where they live.  Demand our Representatives do all they can to get this act passed!!

  1. The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), adopted by Congress in 1978, reversed decades of family separation policies involving Native American families, including efforts to remove children for specious and frequently racist reasons.  It establishes basic requirements to protect Native American children from continued forced removal from their families, tribes and tribal culture.  Now, ICWA is slated to be reviewed by the Supreme Court this fall, a Court with a majority that has shown how eager it is to overturn long standing law and precedent.  If the Court overturns it, states would once again be allowed to remove Native American children from their families and culture.  Even today, in Minnesota for example, Indian children are almost 17 times more likely to be removed from their families and placed in foster care than non-Indian children!!  Our legal system has repeatedly failed tribal nations in this country.  Let our Representatives know that we support federal laws designed to preserve Native American families and respect tribal heritage!!
  1. Congress should expand and reauthorized the Global Food Security Act!!  This program works to empower farmers in low-income countries to adapt to climate change, provide greater opportunities to women producers, prepare for market disruptions, and boost productivity.  Currently limited to just twelve countries, an expansion would allow more farmers to be ready for the next drought, flood, or distant conflict.  Right now, 50 million people in 45 countries are facing extreme hunger!  We must tackle hunger crisis now and invest in long-term solutions to prevent it from worsening in years to come!  Get our Representatives on-board with the effort to expand and renew the Global Food Security Act!!
