June 15, 2018WASHINGTON – Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) released the following statement regarding the Department of Justice’s decision to separate children from parents at the border and deny asylum to victims of domestic violence and gang violence:
“The Administration’s decision to separate families at the border, many of whom are seeking asylum from violence, is misguided and it goes too far. While we need to enforce our laws and protect our border, there is no reason to pull young children away from their parents and put them into a system they do not understand. This policy only serves to hurt people, and it does nothing to solve any of the issues our border states are facing.
“As a former law enforcement officer who has personally handled cases of domestic violence, helped victims escape their abusers, and worked to put these criminals behind bars, I am particularly concerned by the Administration’s decision to deny asylum to victims of domestic and gang violence. It is against our values as Americans, and it should be immediately reconsidered.”
Last month, the Department of Justice announced it would adopt a new policy to separate children from their parents who cross the border illegally. Additionally, there are reports of families being separated after arriving and following the law by applying for asylum.
