Raging fires in the Amazon. Category 5 hurricanes pummeling coastlines. Hottest July globally on record. What do these events have in common? The need for climate action now and community support and togetherness.
On Sept. 20, students all over the world will participate in the Global Climate Strike to bring awareness to the climate crisis, to stop the “business as usual” energy policies that continue to heat our planet and drive us toward climate catastrophe if we don’t drastically reduce carbon emissions in 11 years. Parents, teachers, workers and all concerned people must stand in solidarity with our youth whose future will be most impacted by climate change.
This is not a partisan issue. It is not political and it is not a religious issue. Climate change is a human rights issue, social justice and generational justice issue. It is human-caused and requires human intervention and solutions. The negative impacts harm minority and lower socio-economic communities the most and are occurring more rapidly than scientists believed they would.
On Sept. 20, let’s all show up and show our youth that we care about the climate crisis, their future and that we will support them, stand in solidarity with them and do our part taking action to stop climate change. Show up at the lawn at Flagstaff City Hall from 10 a.m. to noon and be part of the movement and part of history. For more, see globalclimatestrike.net.
