AZ Legislative Alert – June 12, 2023

COCONINO COUNTY DEMOCRATS ARIZONA LEGISLATIVE ALERT

June 12, 2023

STATUS UDATE

The Arizona Legislature is due to return to “work” tomorrow, June 12, after a month’s “vacation”. They are expected to be in session for only a couple of days to pass a few bills. They are expected to then adjourn again until August 1. The strategy is pretty clearly to delay a number of good laws from going into effect. Most laws passed in a current session of the legislature cannot go into effect until 90 days have passed since the legislature has adjourned permanently for the year.
One item the legislature is likely to do when the come back tomorrow is to sanction Representative Stahl-Hamilton (D-21) for her first amendment protest – hiding the bibles that were in the member’s lounge. An effort to emphasis the separation of church and state that our country is based on. You may want to send a vote of confidence to Representative Stahl-Hamilton at or to 601-926-3279.
It also seems that the Legislature will revive a referendum to require proportionate signatures by legislative district to put a citizen initiative on the ballot. This would make it a lot more difficult and expensive to get citizen initiatives on the ballot. It would also allow one district to block a measure from getting to the ballot at all. Ask our Representatives to
vote NO on SCR 1015!!!
Governor Hobbs has vetoed a total of 111 bills so far in this Legislature session!! As far as we can tell, she has not vetoed the anti-ESG bills below. It’s possible these bills have not yet been sent to her by the legislature. It is encouraged that you contact Governor Hobbs or her staff to oppose the following ESG bills:
SB 1500 – would prevent state and local governments from using ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) factors in considerations for investments.
SB 1694 – would prohibit local governments from having a diversity, equity and inclusion program (DEI) or entering into or renewing a contract with a company that participates in a DEI program.
SB 1611 – would prohibit a government entity from entering into ore renewing a contract with a company unless the contract includes the written certification that the company does NOT currently and will NOT implement an environment, social or governance standards policy.
