FEDERAL ACTION ALERT – July 31, 2022

Produced by the Legislative Committee of the Coconino Democratic Party and Democrats of the Red Rocks

THIS WEEK’S ALERTS:   Get our Senators on board quickly and fully to support the Inflation Reduction Act – the vote is this Wednesday, 9/3; The Senate must immediately pass the Respect for Marriage Act; Demand that the Senate take up and pass the Assault Weapons Ban NOW!; Finally, once again, demand that the Senate revisit and PASS the Women’s Health Protection Act!!

  1. The INFLATION REDUCTION ACT must pass – the vote is coming quickly, this Wednesday, 9/3/22.  This bill contains very important items: A 15% Corporate Minimum Tax ensuring that the ultra-rich pay their fair share, Investments in cleaner energy solutions that put us on the path toward a 40% reduction in emissions by 2030, provides permission for Medicare to negotiate drug prices (lowering prescription drug prices), and continues to lower Affordable Care Act premiums for millions of Americans.  This bill may not be all that we wanted but it’s a huge first step!!  This represents the largest investment we have ever made in fighting climate change, plus one of the largest we have ever made in healthcare!  Let’s get this through the Senate and then demand it be passed in the House!!
  1. Pass the Respect for Marriage Act in the Senate!  The House has passed the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would enshrine into federal law the right to same-sex and interracial marriage, as well as repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, a law allowing states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages.  This law would protect the right to marry whomever you want from any future adverse Supreme Court decision.  This is a particular fear in view of Clarence Thomas’ view that other privacy rights (like marriage) may be reviewed now that they have overturned Roe v. Wade.  More than 70% of American’s support this effort so it’s both popular and the right thing to do!  Get our Senators on board with demanding that the Respect for Marriage Act be brought to a full Senate vote ASAP and that they support its passage.
  1. Pass the Assault Weapons Ban in the Senate!!  Just this past Friday, the House passed the Assault Weapons Ban – the first such effort since the last ban expired in 2004.  The bill would criminalize the knowing sale, manufacture, transfer, possession or importation of many types of semi-automatic weapons and large-capacity ammunition feeding devices.  As President Biden has said, “When guns are the number one killer of children in American, when more children die from guns than active-duty police and active-duty military combined, we have to act.”  Former President Bill Clinton signed into law a 10-year assault weapons ban in 1994.  It expired in 2004.  Several studies, including one published in 2019 in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, have shown that mass shooting deaths were reduced during the years the ban was in effect. Get our Senators on board!!
  1. The Women’s Health Protection Act would stop the Republican onslaught of anti-abortion and abortion-restrictive legislation coming out of state legislatures across the country.  It would block states from creating barriers to care and would protect health service providers’ ability to offer abortion care.  It passed the House in 2021 without a single Republican vote but failed to pass the Senate.  Get our Senators to act to get this bill reconsidered and passed in spite of the filibuster!!!
